The man cloaked in shadows smirked darkly at the small woman standing in front of her. She didn't shift nervously. Mental note get more afraid staff.
"They're perfect. Where DID you find these little… Jewels?" He asked dragging out the last word. She looked at the pictures of the teenagers and then at her boss.
"I assume you like them then, sir?" She asked.
"Oh yes! Very much so." He answered throwing his hands out dramatically.
"That's good. They live in Angel Town. Just outside of the next city."
"And what city is that?" He asked coyly. She sighed.
"Hell." He laughed darkly and she shivered a bit. He smirked wider. Finally some fear. She then went back to her cold composure.
"Oh goody!" He reached for his cane. They had a show starting soon.
"I am so eager to meet the new ring master. She seems a bit young." He said smirk falling into a thoughtful frown.
"If you want someone else I can look for a-" He cut her off though.
"NO. She's Fine. Perfect. But I don't want a sharp tongued nitwit as my apprentice. I have to be sure of these things." He said and stood up adjusting his hat as he went. The woman watched him out of the corner of her eyes before following him to the door.
"Yes, sir." She said softly. He opened the door.
"Don't be afraid Clover I'm not going anywhere. After all I have to teach our little Absinth all about our little show." He said and gave her a peck on the cheek. She flushed and punched him. He dodged and walked to the ring.
"I'll see you after the show darling!" He yelled. She was always so much fun to tease. But he was the only one allowed to tease her in such a way should anyone else try and they found themselves as part of the audience.
The woman wondered if he recognized the girl. He had to there, weren't many people with that specific name combination in the world. Absinth Crescent the only person to go into the carnival and come out alive. It had cost her something. Like all the others. However it wasn't the usual price. The usual price was your life. However she got away, albeit by the skin of her teeth but she still got out alive.
'It's a wonder they didn't send her to a mental institute.' She thought as she walked from her boss' office passed the main tent. She saw him making flashes and wild arm motions. She walked until she was surrounded by people. Did they even know? No, they didn't but they'd soon find out. She heard the main theme song of the carnival start up…
I woke up screaming in a cold sweat. I sat up and looked around my dark room and panted slightly. I coughed from almost choking on my own spit and threw the covers off. I walked to the window. They had sound proofed my room long ago. Halloween was coming up. I ran my finger along the small scar on my right arm. One of the few ghastly reminders of what happened ten years ago. As was the stamp permanently pressed on my wrist. It was a top hat with a cane under it. There were letters in creepy writing under it. TDC the dark Carnival. They're best time is Halloween but they're a year round carnival. For the dark humored. More like those with a death wish. I sighed looking at the moon and then walked down stairs to the kitchen. I grabbed a glass and poured some water into it before drinking it down. I shook my head slightly and looked around the dark kitchen. I heard feet patter closer and looked down. Kristy looked up at me from behind the head of her over stuffed bear.
"Abby? What's wrong?" She asked.
"I had a bad dream. Don't worry about me I'm okay." I said. She nodded and I walked her back to her room.
"Are you sure?" She asked when I hesitated to go into her room. Her night light was blood red and brought back bad memories. I nodded and smiled before I tucked her into my room.
"I can give you my nightlight if you want." She said. I ruffled her hair.
"No thanks I'm okay." I said and went to the door I looked back at her.
"Big girls don't need nightlights." I left the door open a crack for her and then went back up to my room. I opened the door and found a top hat on my bed along with a cane and familiar over coat. My scream stuck in my throat and I felt my arm start to shake. I clutched the door handle tightly. I balled my fist and glared. Be damned if I was gonna let this sick bastard get the satisfaction of killing me without a fight. I left my door open just slightly making sure that I could not only run but people would hear me screaming.
"My, she's certainly got an interesting library." He mused looking around. His hair was still pure white. It was pulled back in a small pony tail with a small black cord.
"Indeed." I said standing just close enough to the door to run if he went for the cane and got it before me. He spun around and grinned.
"Well hello. I'm sure you remember me." He said and I gave a curt nod.
"Well then it's my greatest pleasure to extend this offer to you!" He said and I frowned watching him closely.
"Last time you said something remotely close to that I got a sucker covered in my parent's blood." I said on guard. He made a 'tut-tut' sound and wagged his finger at me.
"See you need to learn how to let things go."
"You murdered my parents in front of me. I think I have every right to hate you." I said glaring at me. He sighed and pressed a button in his pocket. The song started to play. I gasped and grabbed my head trying to force it out. Blood seemed to spatter my vision and I fell to my knees.
"You have been picked to play a little game in order to become the next ring master of TDC. You'll have to fight your way to be there in the end but I have the most faith in you. That's why I'm personally inviting you." He said and patted my head like he had once when I was seven. I looked up at him and glared.
"I don't want to be anything like you."
"Well then all you have to do is lose the game but then again you know what happens when you loose the game."
"I won't set foot back in that place ever again."
"Oh something tells me you will. You won't be able to stay away." He said and then picked up his hat and cane. He put the hat on his head and all I could see was his creepy smile. It was like he had rows and rows of fangs for teeth. I was so freaking scared suddenly like I couldn't move paralyzed with fear scared. He nodded to me and then hopped out the window. Once he was out of sight I jumped up I noticed there was several things of very large fireworks on my bed where his hat was. I grabbed them and through them out the window and about an inch or two from my hand they exploded. I managed to pull my hand back fast enough to only get singed a bit. I heard his laugh. I sighed and sunk onto the floor staring up at the ceiling. There was no power on heaven or on earth that would get me to go back there. Oh how I wish that was true…
